Living Successfully – Building my team

We are most successful when we work together; we instinctively know this as human beings. This principle is played out every day in naturally occurring teams, whether it is the family, the community or the country. Yet it is in very this area that we often have the greatest challenges, resulting in our under achieving or not achieving success. Why? This occurs when a group of individuals fail to work together in harmony with one another.

To build a successful team we need to have:

1. A common goal or reason for being – the most successful teams, tend to be the ones who are focused and in pursuit of a common objective. This is how 12 men over 2000 years ago, so profoundly impacted the world; they were the disciples of Jesus Christ.

2. Clear leadership – this is distinct from the leader. A successful group or organization can have different leaders at different times but will encounter difficulties if there is more that one leader at the same time. “Leadership is a process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal." - Kevin Kruse

3. Division of labour – within each team there will be different roles to play and different tasks to be performed by various members. Thus in football (soccer) if the goalkeeper tries to be the striker and leaves his goal bars unprotected this can have dire consequences for the team. Similarly each member must fulfill his or her role within the team.

4. Affirmation and support of each other – the hallmark of a successful team is one of unity, where “The whole is greater than the sum of the parts" - Aristotle
